Over View: a 3D fabric ceiling Over View, an installation at MuseumLab in Pittsburgh, Pa., is intricately patterned to replicate the leaded glass ceiling that once graced the space. Photo: FreelandBuck. Walk into the central lobby of MuseumLab, an experiential learning center for older children created by the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, and look up. While you may think you’re looking at a historic leaded glass ceiling, you’re actually viewing a textile reproduction of the original 19th century ceiling that was removed years ago. The Children’s Museum took over the former Carnegie Free Library of Allegheny, which was built in 1890, to house MuseumLab. The museum’s renovation preserved much of the building’s original design, including detailed archways, columns and mosaic floors. But the ceiling required a more modern solution. The museum worked with FreelandBuck, a Los Angeles, Calif. , and New York City-based architectural firm, to create Over View, a three-dimensional drawi...

Artful camouflage Exterior Shades and Screens, International Achievement Awards 2019  Outstanding Achievement As part of the renovation of the outdoor Muny Theatre (St. Louis Municipal Opera Theatre), the client wanted to hide the enormous stage speakers from the audience. Two large mesh panels, each 10 feet 10 inches by 34 feet 6 inches, were installed behind cables to create a concave shape in front of the speakers. The scrim-like construction allows 70 percent airflow through the fabric for optimal acoustic transparency and minimal billowing. Mesh 70 is a wide-width, open weave PVC-coated fabric suitable for long-term exterior use. The mesh, which works well as a front projection surface, was painted to match the plaster exterior surface of the musical stage walls. The client loved the look of the panels over the speakers and how well they blended in with the existing stage walls. Lawrence Fabric & Metal Structures Inc.
